Australian Rules Football is set to return home to the town that made the game, Brisbane.
That’s according to the Brisbane Lions’ 91-point win over Gold Coast on Saturday night, where they showed the newest Queensland club who really is the boss.
Fans are beginning to re-emerge out of the woodwork from right over the state, as Queensland’s beloved AFL franchise returns to their three-peat form.
Brisbane are now on their biggest hot streak since 2002 after putting a cricket score on the board at the Gabba on Saturday night, which marked their most points in a game since round 17, 2007.
AFL, which historically struggled as Australia’s third-most-popular winter code until Brisbane won three premierships in a row in the early 2000s, is finally coming home.
With this spectacular finals dash, the Lions appear to have reawakened the long-latent AFL fanbase in the river city.
So much so that people in Brisbane are even beginning to purchase, and wear scarves, around their necks. Which is something usually only associated with Southern football fans – the type that boo Adam Goodes and use the word ‘flog’.
However, given most of the Brisbane crowd are temporarily-converted NRL fans, there will be no booing in the stands when the Lions take on the Cats at the Gabba this Saturday night, which is what uncultured Victorians do.
There will only cheering. Because football is coming home.
