A cautious young man told The Advocate‘s Sydney correspondent this morning outside an inner-south cafe that he’s often left gobsmacked by how racist and divided the United States is compared to Australia.

Fabian Tobias said he was on a day trip from his home on the Harbour City’s lower north shore to Sydney’s inner-upper-south-side this morning with his fiance to look at antique furniture.

And much to his annoyance, his finance made him take a detour through Redfern so she could visit a cafe she found on Broadsheet.

“Redfern still looks pretty dodgy to me,” he said.

“When I went to uni around the corner, I was always worried my car was going to get broken into. I still lock the door driving through this shithole! [laughs] No, seriously, though,”

“You said you were a journalist, how crazy is American right now?! It’s like watching the collapse of an empire. Real last days of Rome shit,”

“As fun as being in a riot looks, I’m actually so glad we don’t have them here – or any of their systematic racial problems. Australia literally the last sane place on Earth.”

And with that, Fabian’s fiance (who was double-parked with her Volkswagen’s hazard lights on opposite the cafe) tooted the horn for him to get in with the coffees.

More to come.
